“Government is aware of the potential of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector as a major tool to reduce unemployment and accelerate economic growth.” stated the Minister of Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Cooperatives, Dr. Rajesh Jeetah, at a press conference yesterday. Contributions of SMEs have been more significant to the Mauritian economy since the past few years. According to the census of economic activities for 2007, the gross output of the SME sector was Rs 72.9 billion compared to Rs 29.1 billion in 2002. The sector contributed up to 20 % of the country’s Gross Domestic Product and provided 40% total employment, that is employing 208 797 individuals.
